    Room - Emma Donoghue

This is the best book I have ever read, her style of writing is very unusual and it gripped me from the first page, very sad story but also uplifting and inspiring, I would highly recommend this book!

I'm getting to it, lol. It's been on my list for a while. I have read reviews that it is depressing, but also well written.

I don't think it is depressing at all, it is a story of human survival in extreme circumstances and yes, brilliantly written you MUST read it!!

          Room - Emma Donoghue

I finished it yesterday. I was engrossed and had trouble putting it down, once I started. I was however disturbed by some things: for example, the breast feeding. I could understand if they didn't have enough food, but they did. It was kind of disgusting to me to hear little Jack go on and on about how "creamy" the left one was, and then about pushing penis down.

Also, thought the 'rescue' was a bit rushed and implausible. Jack couldn't even hardly speak, yet somehow managed to lead the police to where he and Ma were being held...seemingly within minutes. It felt like the second half of the book was rushed, and I half expected Ma to be questioned about sexual abuse (not that I thought she did, but I could understand why there might be questions).

Just a few of the many annoyances I had with the book...another was the way Jack couldn't say a complete sentence correctly..."Ma hots the food", then throwing out words most adults are unfamilar with...anyway, I don't regret having read it, but can't deny that (I felt) it had faults.

And, although she seemed to place the story in the USA, the British slang of all of the characters was too obvious. I am tempted to count how many times Jack said "bits", LOL.

Interesting observations about the faults LG - I hadn't noticed really, I just loved it so much I probably glossed over them LOL. For me I took the feeding thing to be a comfort and closeness issue that they both needed in order to survive their awful situation and not about nourishment, I don't think the penis thing was in relation to that was it? in any case I think that it probably something that is just a natural part of being a boy, I know my 3 year old is already fascinated by his and as soon as his nappy is off it becomes a source of entertainment :H

I do know what you mean about the rescue, that could have done with being elaborated on a little and was a bit far-fetched!

I haven't read any of her other books yet have you? Apparently they are all completely different to this one!

No I haven't read anything else by this author either. One more thing I didn't like about Room: Jack sucking on Ma's old tooth. I had to literally almost skim through the pages where he was doing that, because I was shuddering in horror, lol.

I enjoyed the Room. Just finished the Hypnotist , by Lars Kepler, very good.

Overall, I did like the book. I enjoyed the first half better, but it was unique and interesting. Sorry about all the details I didn't like, lol.

I recommend The Sixteenth Tale if you haven't read it yet, by Diane Sutton. I wish she'd write something else! Also, The House at Riverton, AND The Forgotten Garden, by Kate Morton. Hope you haven't read these yet, because you will love them!

Uh, that is, "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. Oops!!!
