In The Garden Of Beasts by Erik Larson

Just finished In The Garden Of Beasts by Erik Larsen. This is a wonderful historical read about an American family living in Berlin during Hitler's rise to power. It centers on William Dodd and his family, after Dodd reluctantly accepts the role of U.S. Ambassardor to Germany. Larson has meticulously researched the Dodds' intimate witness to Hitler's ascendancy and created an edifying narrative of this historical byway that has all the pleasures of a political thriller: innocents abroad, the gathering storm…The story of prewar Germany, of the Jews, of book burnings, of the Reichstag trial, of the Night of the Long Knives, of the Nuremberg rally, of the unfolding disaster is old news. But Larson has connected the dots to make a fresh picture of these terrible events.

Just loved the recounts from Dodds daughter Martha. If you have read PLEASE post your thoughts.

While historical accounts tend to keep me reaching for the TV remote every few chapters, I was totally engaged. Thank Dog I finished this before the Olympics started or I would've have most certainly lost the narrative. GREAT book, and I recommend it highly!
