The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling

JK Rowling's The Casual Vacancy leaks ahead of release - Telegraph

Ok, I'm not technically reading it YET, but I have it on order at the library (and I'm only 146 in line!).

My only reservation is that I work at City Hall...so the whole Council/Board Member thing is boring to me. I'll give her a chance to snag my interest. By the time I get the darn book I will probably be retired anyway.

I will also wait for reviews but the plot sounds unique and I like that.

Okay - started reading it and could NOT get into it. I have too much that I want to read to spend time reading something that doesn't grab me right away, so finally gave up. I am one of the few in the world that also couldn't get into the Harry potter books too - so maybe that might have something to do with it, but for me, it wasn't worth my time.

The reviews are not great here, one said if she was not JKR, it would be mundane. Sorry your having to wait so long K9, it's in our local supermarket, it's not selling like 50 shades.

I'll be the dissenting voice - I really enjoyed it. I didn't LOVE it as in rip right through it but I thought it was gripping, clever, touching - quite heartbreaking in the end. And it contains some interesting commentary on class and addictions and societal stigma around both. The main thing that was a bit frustrating was that there are so many characters it takes you awhile to get your head around them all and ultimately I felt that it would have been stronger if she'd chopped out at least a couple of them and therefore given the main characters more room to develop. Still, I'd recommend it.

I also thought the criticism about it being too dark were ludicrous. Yes, it's quite, quite dark in places but so what? Firstly, like HP wasn't? And secondly, just because she's famous as a children's author should that consign her forever to writing kid appropriate material? I think not. It's definitely an adult's book but it's clearly demarked as such.

I am 2/3rds finished with this book and I really like it! I have to agree with Lilly though, I think she introduced too many characters too fast....I had to flip back a couple of times. But now that I am nearly finished, I think I understand who these people are. LOL
