The Woman Who Walked Into Doors - Roddy Doyle

      Hi, BHalo

I finished it last night. I had to take a break about 2/3 of the way through. The author does such an amazing job of getting the reader into Paula's head! Given how spot on the description of addicted drinking was, I suspect we got a good look at how it feels to be a battered wife. The description of how it felt to not be seen by others was heartbreaking and for once I understood why a woman doesn't "just leave".

I'm very glad I read this - thanks for putting me on to it.

It was hard to read at some points and also hard to put down. That 'they don't see me' part was so powerful.

I have never been battered or abused. I wouldn't say I was unsympathetic, but I have friends who have confided in me in the past. I never could understand why they didn't 'just leave'. If only it were that simple.
